CAPITOL HILL (AP) - An economic stimulus plan that will see many
taxpayers get rebate checks is awaiting President Bush's signature.
Lawmakers facing the prospect of an election-year recession,
passed the emergency plan today. It will give rebates of $600 to
$1,200 to most taxpayers. And disabled veterans, the elderly and
other low-income people will get $300 checks.
House passage by a 380-34 vote came a few hours after Senate
leaders ended a long squabble over the bill.
The 168-billion-dollar plan is intended to provide cash for
people to spend and tax relief for businesses to make new
investments. Lawmakers hope the checks and tax breaks will provide
the slumping economy with a shot in the arm.
President Bush has said he'll sign the legislation, even though
it's larger than he favored.
Rebate checks could begin arriving in May. The rebates would be
based on 2007 tax returns, which are not due until April 15th.
