Gas Prices Hurt Delivery Drivers
Pizza dough is flying through the air at Pavone's Pizza shop on butternut street. Business is good these days...but not every employee benefits from it.
Julie Felton says, "It's crunch time for everybody. It seems like our drivers are going out but the're not getting tipped as well and everybodys feeling the crunch." Pizza delivery drivers rely on customers tips to fill up their tanks every day. Fewer tips means less gas and in some cases deliveries can end up costing them. It's also the drivers responsibility to make any and all needed repairs to their cars, all at the expense of delivering that fresh hot pizza to your door. Drivers say it takes money directly out of their pockets. they put gas in their tanks and drive all day which has a negative effect on how much they pocket at the end of the night. Pizza shops like Pavone's are forced to come up with creative ways to try to save their drivers some extra dough. Julie says, "Instead of doing a half hour delivery time we have to do 45 minutes and try to group them together into 2 or 3 instead of one going each time just to save on gas for the drivers." Pizza store managers say that if gas costs keep rising and their delivery men don't start to see profits, they may be forced to find the money in other places. It's more money out of your pocket, especially when everyone feels the burn, but it may make you think twice the next time you tip your driver. Click here to see Joe Roetz's full story |
