Hundreds Of Honeywell Workers Lose Their Jobs

By Joe Roetz

One by one, workers left the Honeywell plant after hearing that this October, the company will phase out the manufacturing section of its plant and move the jobs overseas. Vicki Hinds, a manufacturing employee, says "We had a meeting right away, before we started work. We were told that the company would be taking about 10 to 12 months to close."

Honeywell currently employs almost 600 workers. The factory in Skaneatlas Falls produces portable scanning devices used to read product barcode labels. Employees arriving for later shifts heard rumors of the layoffs before setting foot inside. Hinds says, "everybody is aware that its happening everywhere in the United States. They are trying to provide more money for their pockets and to do that you need cheaper labor."

Representatives at Honeywell were not available for comment, but released a statement saying, "...we are going to do everything we can to make this transition as smooth as possible for those affected... Honeywell will maintain a presence in the greater Skaneateles Falls/Syracuse area."
