Skunks Invade Liverpool

Skunks Invade Liverpool

By Haley Hinds

You may not always see them, but you can definitely smell them. Skunks are being spotted all over the Village of Liverpool, and the problem is so bad, some people wont go outside. "Most people know what the lake smells like," said Rachael Blundell. "The only thing i could say is that it smells worse than that. There's nothing we can really do to stop them."
One man is singlehandedly trying to. Jim Gleason was hired by the Town of Salina to set up traps and respond to skunk spottings, and his list of customers grows by the day. His job begins in April when he tries to remove the female skunks before they give birth. "Every year, every female skunk that's left is going to have 5 to 8 young, and those young, the following year, are going to reproduce, and that's a problem," said Gleason.
Once he catches a skunk, it's released into a wooded area. Gleason says that the best thing you can do is block off any small openings where skunks might try to hide. They typically hide in sheds, under steps, or decks that are close to the ground. If you do spot one, leave it alone and don't feed it. Gleason says that while the skunks will never be completely eliminated, the majority of them can be taken care of if trapped properly.
