Possible Mergers in Cicero?

Possible Mergers in Cicero?

By Joe Roetz

Budget cuts in Cicero's 5 fire districts comes on the heels of a recent merger between Clay police and the Onondaga County Sheriff's Department. Now, Cicero is exploring its own money saving measures and the word consolidation is in the mix. Chet Dudzinski, Cicero's Town Supervisor, says, "The idea has always been discussed informally. We haven't come to that point in time yet. We need to do a lot more research before we make a decision on that."

First, Cicero town officials have developed an EMS and Fire Committee to research ways to save money. Only a few months after the committee was formed, thousands in savings was found in insurance premiums. Michael Stassi, Brewerton's Fire Chief, says, "He came back and gave me a price, it was $24,000 less than what we currently pay and have been paying for a long time."

There are five volunteer fire departments that serve the town of Cicero. They include the Cicero Fire Department, South Bay, Brewerton, North Syracuse and Bridgeport. Each company operates independently, meaning each has its own equipment. Downsizing equipment could be another cost saving measure. Dudzinski says, "If you get a big enough fire and a big enough accident scene, everyone comes anyway. So why do we have all this duplicate equipment through the entire town?"
