New York Thruway's 25 Million Dollar Budget Deficit

New York Thruway's 25 Million Dollar Budget Deficit

By Joe Roetz

Chris Pauley of New Hartford uses the NY thruway often. On this trip, Pauley and his family are returning from Cleveland and feel the impact of last January's toll hike. Pauley says, "I think it's ridiculous and I wonder where all the money this state generates and where it goes."

2,000,000 fewer drivers traveled on the Thruway in June and July of 2008 compared to 2007. That decline leaves a 25 to 30 million dollar hole in thruway revenue. it could worsen if drivers continue conserving gas. {paul reid, who lives in lockport, says, "$25,000,000 to $30,000,000 compared to the overall shortfall New York is pocket change, so i think that's the least of New York's problems."

Thruway officials released this statement to CBS 5 news.... "Recognizing the severity of this problem, the authority has implemented significant operating cost containment measures that are expected to generate more than $9 million in operating savings..." Assemblyman Bill Magnarelli is hoping taxpayers won't have to shoulder the remaining costs. He says, "I believe very strongly some of these Authorities are costing taxpayers of New York millions and millions of dollars and are not accountable to the legislature when they should be."
