Fatal Crash in Cicero

Fatal Crash in Cicero

One person is dead after a terrible accident in Cicero this afternoon involving a tractor trailer and a pickup truck. State Police still have not released the name of the person who died in the pickup truck when it hit the tractor trailer head on. They're still trying to identify the body because it was so badly burned. Neighbors along Route 31 near Whiting Road heard the crash around 3:30pm today. Police say the driver of a 2003 pickup truck crossed the median, drifting into the path of a tractor trailer in the Eastbound lane. That driver, 37 year old Theresa Spicer of Clinton is ok. She was treated at the scene for minor leg injuries. Spicer was driving a tractor full of chicken feed to the Utica area. The feed quickly ignited after the crash and both vehicles caught fire. "The force of the tractor trailer and pickup propelled the vehicles about 100 yards further east where they struck a telephone pole," says Captain Jeff Raub of the NY State Police. "And the pole carried hot wires and caused a fireball to occur." Crews had to keep putting out that fire a few times because those power lines were live for quite a while, keeping authorities from getting to the body inside the pickup truck. National Grid had to cut power before the scene could be investigated and cleared. A portion of Rt. 31 near Whiting Road is closed tonight as National Grid crews work to restore power in the Cicero-Clay area. About 100 customers do not have power, but it should be back on around 1am. Stay with CBS 5 for updates on this crash.
