Hospital Program Helps Sick Kids Keep Up In School

Children suffering from life-threatening illnesses often are too sick to go to school. Through a program at University Hospital called "Staying Connected is the Best Medicine," children are able to get back into their classrooms. A five pound videoconferencing unit allows children to attend school from either the hospital or at home. Through a camera the student can see and talk to their teacher and peers. 17-year-old Naomi Glenister is an eleventh grader at Sandy Creek High School. She was diagnosed with Leukemia in May 2006. Since then, she's been unable to attend classes. Four weeks ago, she started using this device. Naomi says, "Here I have something to get up for, get out of bed, get ready for, and I'm like one of the kids again. I'm actually living to do something."
