Elderly Woman Dies Because of Son's Negligence
A Whitestown man in charge of taking care of his mother, let her live in horrible conditions and is now charged with his death. Oneida County Sheriff's Deputies, arrested David E. Auchmoody, 61,of Judd Road in Whitestown for Manslaughter in the second degree.
David Auchmoody was living with his elderly mother, Edith Auchmoody, age 89 at her residence in February of this year. It is believed David Auchmoody had been staying at the residence for over a period of years. David Auchmoody was entrusted with his mother's care. Back on February 22, 2007 the Oneida County Sheriff's responded to the residence for an unattended death. Upon the deputies questioning David about his mother's death, it was learned David had moved his mother from inside her residence to the attached garage which had been converted over to David's living quarters. David had cleaned his mother up and moved her from her bedroom out to the garage sometime after she had passed away. When the Sheriff's Deputies and Investigators went to go inside Edith's residence they were shocked by the living conditions. The smell and condition of the residence was uninhabitable.
Upon entering the kitchen, garbage, dirty dishware and what ever else was piled all over. There was a narrow path way barely negotiable that led through the residence to the rear bedroom where Edith Auchmoody laid on inflatable mattresses that were soiled and debris laden. The windows were boarded up, cobwebs free hanging and flowing through out the residence. Some rooms in the residence were so overstuffed with trash and refuse they were unable to enter the rooms. According to Investigators words can not describe the deplorable living conditions that Mrs. Auchmoody was forced to reside in. Upon examining Edith Auchmoody's body there was evidence of rodent and insect activity along with open wounds that were left untreated for a period of time. The wounds were the result of bed lesions left untreated and cared for. According to Doctors Mrs. Auchmoody would have been bed ridden for weeks. The injuries where extensive to the point of revealing the victims bone. The Autopsy ruled the cause of death as Osteomyelitis and emaciation due to severe neglect. During the course of the investigation, it showed David Auchmoody was the primary care taker for his mother but failed to provide due care and diligence with respect to his mother's health. It was clear to investigators that David Auchmoody was hiding the fact his mother lived in deplorable and unsanitary conditions by trying to clean up her body and moving her into his living quarters. David also called the funeral home to report her death and for her removal rather than calling the police. The Sheriff's office was notified by the funeral home of the unattended death. The case was presented to the Grand Jury and an indictment was handed down. Sheriff's Deputies and Investigators from the Sheriff's Office and Marshall Service executed the warrant Thursday. David Auchmoody was taken into custody without incident and arraigned in County Court before Judge Donalty. He remains in jail tonight. |
