Amputee Fights For Worker's Comp
First, she fought for her life. Now, Ruby Blount is fighting for her worker's compensation benefits.
The Syracuse woman was standing in her Kenmore Avenue driveway on December 6 when a man, allegedly under the influence of drugs, skidded off the road and struck her from behind. The single mother of three was pinned between two cars. "I heard the screech and then, 'Bam!'" Blount said, clutching the walker she now uses for support. "There are no words to describe the pain. (Childbirth) had nothing on that pain." Arteries and bones in Blount's left leg were crushed, and her nerves were completely severed. As a result, doctors were forced to amputate her left leg above the knee. "Everything -- taking a bath, taking care of my kids -- everything is different," Blount said, crying uncontrollably. "Nothing will ever be the same." Yet, the worst shock was yet to come. Last week, Blount received word that her worker's compensation benefits had been denied. She was both out of work, and out of money. Blount is employed by Enable, an organization whose mission -- ironically -- is to provide service to the disabled. In paperwork dated January 30, the worker's compensation board stated that Enable had challenged the claim. Late Monday, Enable's CEO told CBS 5's Steve Flamisch that it is not her organization's challenge -- that the board had denied the claim since the accident happened while Blount was on her lunch break. Either way, the worker's compensation benefits are being withheld and Blount, who earned $10.75 per hour and shares a tiny room with two of her children, is desperate for financial help. "How do I take care of my kids?" she asked through tears. "What do I do until I get back to work?" Blount is asking the community for donations. She can be reached at 876-6709. |
