Dalai Lama at Colgate

Dalai Lama at Colgate

Five thousand people got to see the Dalai Lama Tuesday at Colgate University. He didn't talk about the political unrest in his home country, but there were plenty of protesters waiting for him.

About a hundred protesters were limited to a corner across the street from Sanford Field House where the Dalai Lama was speaking. One group says he's trying to repress religious freedom instead of helping it along. Another group said China has every right to be in Tibet, and that the Dalai Lama should intervene to stop the fighting that's going on in his home country right now. Protester Wei Gao says, "We want to voice to the general public that what is happening in China and we want the Dalai Lama to use his power to stop all kinds of violence against civilians."

While the protesters were kept far away from the Dalia Lama, inside this building behind me nearly 5,000 watched him, and he only mentioned the Chinese once in his opening greeting. He greeted the people in the audience by showing that he's comfortable in his chair.

He spoke at length about obtaining happiness. He told the crowd full of Colgate University students that young people are the future and they should be optimistic. The Dalai Lama says "Keep optimism. Be optimistic. That is essential. Without losing hope. No matter these difficulties, we have the ability to work with these difficulties."

Joan Dresser of Utica heard his speech. She says, "We thought it was very good. Very peaceful man. Made you feel good listening to him."
