Boating and Gas Prices
Sticker shock at the pump isn't just for motorists. Boaters this year are having to decide whether they can even afford to leave the dock.
It could be a rocky summer for the recreational vehicle industry, and for boating in particular. Even modest size boats can use up dozens of gallons in a day, larger boats much more. The country's largest boat dealer saw sales fall 28% last quarter and local dealers agree business is off Dave Brown at R.C. Congel Boats in Cicero says when people want a boat, they get it. Jim Pynn at J&S Marine says only a few of his hundreds of customers have decided to sell their boat. But he admits he had to raise the price at his gas dock again this morning. "I raised it to $4.20 this morning," Pynn said, "and I know people are going to spend more time at the dock and when they do cruise, they're going to cruise much slower." "You have your ups and you have your downs, but boats will never go away," salesman Dave Brown says. "Gas prices will go up, they'll go down, they'll stay the same for a while, they'll go down, they'll go back up again, but people will spend the money to have the fun," he said. |
