Habitat for Humanity Funding Troubles
There is a house on Grand Avenue in Syracuse that is unfinished. The floor needs more work, the walls are bare. This is the new routine for the group called Habitat for Humanity, which builds the "American Dream" for low income families.
Habitat gets no government funding and relies only on private donors. Lately, those donations are off, and construction costs are up. Suzanne Williams from Habitat says, "As people's cost of living increases then that decreases the amount of donations. So our donations are going down and the cost of building a house is going up." A typical habitat home takes five months to finish, the houses under construction now are quickly approaching the eight month mark. Suzanne says if they had the necessary money and people to pitch in, these houses could be completed in about 4 weeks. With summer approaching, she hopes a larger response in donations will help those who need a new home. |
