Clay Merger Battle Intensifies

Clay Merger Battle Intensifies

By WTVH News4

The vote is Monday, June 23, 2008.

The town Supervisor says the new allegations by the officers against the merger are like, "9 guys who want to say we don't care about the taxpayers, we just want to keep our sandbox for us to play in."

The poilce who are fighting the merger say the people who support it are being far too generous in their estimation about how much money a merger would save taxpayers.

Supervisor James Rowley had already endorsed the plan. Now outgoing Commissioner Owen Honors comes out in favor at a hastily organized press conference at the Clay Town Hall. Also on hand seven officers in support who've resigned from the Clay police Union.

The proposal is supported by county lawmakers and the Onondaga County Sheriff. The Clay police would be absorbed into the sheriff's department promising the same number of road patrols, no change in rank, and millions in savings to Clay taxpayers. The Clay Police benevolent Association maintains the savings, 1.3 million dollars in 2009, are exaggerated. The PBA has hired a public relations firm to get its message out. If it passes, the Sheriff's department takes over July 1, 2008.
