New York Drivers

By WTVH News4

New York is home to some of the country's most uneducated drivers. In an annual survey administered by GMAC Insurance, it was discovered that 1 in 6 drivers, or 33 million Americans, would fail a written driving exam. 5,524 licensed drivers from all 50 states were given a simulation DMV exam with questions from yellow traffic lights to safe following distances. Kansas has the best drivers while New York was ranked 49th, only beating the District of Columbia and New Jersey. New York moved up two places after ranking last in 2007

Deraux Branch, President of Branch's Driving School says it doesn't matter if you're 16 or 60, there's always something new to learn. "There's right of way, knowing when to go, when to wait, do you approach a middle of an intersection, do you stay back?" said Branch. "That's a lot of judgment." He also cites rising illiteracy as a possible cause of the problem. Most drivers say they have just forgotten over the year.
