CSX Train Derailment in Minoa
No one was injured when three cars jumped the tracks in Minoa Sunday night but crews worked for hours to get the cars back on the track.
The incident happened just before 7 Sunday night. Fire and Police from East Syracuse, Minoa, Manlius, and Dewitt were called out to the CSX train station on Fremont Road after two rail cars, each containing ethanol, came in contact with another car. Nothing spilled but the cars did jump the tracks. Crews had to be very careful when trying to put the cars back on the rails and at one point, they considered calling a local evacuation. "The worst case scenario is if one of the cars puncture and there's an explosion that follows. but they've informed us that the odds of that happening are next to 0. The worst case right now would probably be a leak if anything, and they have an environmental group over there in case it does happen," said Bob Russell of the East Syracuse Fire Department. A crane was brought in to put the cars back on the tracks and crews on the scene say the problem should be fixed Monday morning. Two tracks were shut down, but other tracks were open so the accident was not creating any backups. |
