Church in Warners Closing

Church in Warners Closing

A Catholic church that's been around for nearly a century and the last Church Father Joseph Champlin led before his death, will be closing its doors in just two weeks. "Our Lady of Good Counsel Catholic Church" in Warners say the Diocese of Syracuse didn't even give them chance to meet the challenge.

It's a tight-knit bunch here, some 200 families, which is why they say it's so hard for them to understand why their home church is closing.

Despite its size, parishioner Bob Ferguson and his wife say they meet all their financial obligations, in fact they say they exceed them.

"As far as parish priests, we have utilized retired priests in the past and they love to come here because we provide a home, we run all the other things, they just come in and do the liturgy, so that isn't a reason either. I'm bewildered by the decision. I hate to say it, but I just think it's a shortsighted decision," said Bob Ferguson.

The last mass at the Church will be on Sunday June 29.
