Health Insurance For Volunteer Firefighters

Health Insurance For Volunteer Firefighters

By WTVH News1

Volunteer firefighters put in countless hours of work each week. Most have to work more than one job to get health insurance because as a volunteer, it's not offered. Albany lawmakers are working to make volunteer firefighters and emergency medical workers eligible for low-cost health insurance.

Assemblywoman RoAnn Destito of Oneida County spear headed the bill, saying the state has lost about 20,000 volunteers over two decades. If signed, the bill won't cost taxpayers anything. Volunteers will pay their own low cost premiums.

The bill passed in the house, and is under review by Governor David Paterson. Assemblywoman Destito says it should be signed by the end of the summer.
