LaFayette Experiments W/4-Day Workweek

LaFayette Experiments W/4-Day Workweek

By Jon Dougherty

It's an idea many school districts have tossed around for years to save money. This summer the LaFayette School District is the first in Central New York to put a 4-day workweek into motion.

Most LaFayette School District employees will spend their summer hours working 10 hours a day, 4 days a week. It's an attempt to save money on utility bills, and help employees save on transportation costs.

At LaFayette High School, employees are only 2 weeks into the 4 day workweek experiment and school officials can already see a difference. Jim Kesler, LaFayette Superintendent of Grounds and Buildings says, "The morale is up and with everything that needs to be done over the summer, they're getting a lot done."

LaFayette school Superintendent Peter Tigh launched the idea a couple years ago in Portville, where he was superintendent. It was successful, and he's expecting the same for Lafayette. The three Lafayette school buildings are closed on Friday's. All electricity turned off, saving money. A similar program in Pennsylvania saved one school district $105,000 in utilities.

Superintendent Tigh says the results from these 7-weeks will be compared to the expenses of last summer. And assuming there are savings, a 4-day work week will again be implemented next summer. But students take heed..this will *not* mean a four day school week this fall.
