Plumpton's Perspective: Landmark Celebrates 80 Years
Loew's State Theatre turns 80-years old this month. Now being restored to its former grandeur as the Landmark, it's hard to believe the City's last remaining great movie palace was almost replaced by a parking garage.
First opened at the crossroads of vaudeville, silent pictures and talkies, Syracuse's "Loew's State" Theatre served as a showplace for each of them. Considered to be one of the finest examples of far eastern architecture in North America, it's full of rare hard woods, unique plaster-work and fine tapestries. A trip to Loew's to see a show was an event in itself. After Loew's corporation closed it in the mid-seventies, a group of dedicated fans began an effort to restore the theater which continues to this day.
