Konopka Takes Batting Practice With Chiefs

By WTVH Sports

Crunch captain Zenon Konopka celebrated his first day of hockey free agency by swinging a baseball bat.

Konopka took batting practice with the Syracuse Chiefs on Tuesday, one day after he threw out the first pitch at their game.

"Captain Crunch" took a few solid cuts, but the most memorable thing about his time in the batting cage was the bat he broke. The incident caused an outbreak of laughter from Zenon and the players watching behind the cage.

Konopka says he received several offers on the first day of free agency, but doesn't feel like he's close to making a decision on who he'll play for next season.

"(I got) a lot of phone calls from different teams and my agent," Konopka said. "And nothing has really settled yet.

"We're still talking to Syracuse and Columbus and making sure they're in the mix. And it will be a little time before anything's resolved in it."

Konopka scored 55 points during the regular season last year for the Crunch, leading the team to a record-breaking winning streak. He also helped Syracuse come within one win of reaching the Calder Cup Playoffs' final four.
