Pine Grosbeak

A Pine Grosbeak is a large finch from the northern forests that is only seen in CNY in occasional winters, known as irruptive seasons. In these irruption winters, natural food sources in northern Canada are not hearty enough to sustain these and many other seed and fruit-eaters, and they move southward to find ready food sources. This lovely male Pine Grosbeak is one of a small flock of such finches seen regularly this winter on Potter Road in the Three Rivers Wildlife Mgt. Area near Baldwinsville. They are not skittish and offer great looks to anyone who ventures out to see them.

Wow, we certainly see our share of the rose breasted grosbeaks here in Oswego county but I've never seen a Pine Grosbeak. That is a great picture and what a beautiful bird. I'm jealous.
