Great State Parks near CNY.

The Finger lakes are home to many great parks within easy driving distance from Syracuse. Some that I like are Letchworth State park, Watkins Glen, Filmore Glen and Buttermilk Falls State park. They are great places have a cook out, a hike, camp, fish or try to get that great shot of some wildlife or some nice scenery.
You may not like N.Y. for the high taxes or long winters but we do have beautiful state parks and nice summer weather, so get out there.
